We begin our season as a hybrid ensemble for the first time, with members playing together both in-person and virtually.  Despite challenges, we will still be making music!

Our program includes Gordon Jacob's Old Wine in New Bottles, mvt. 1, George Walker's beautiful Lyric for Strings and the Allegretto movement from Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, which was encored at its premier and is often performed alone.

Spring Concert: Voices Past and Present

Virtual Event: Friday, June 11, 7:30 p.m.

Photo of composersThe Cal Poly Symphony presents “Voices Past and Present,” concluding its first full season as a hybrid ensemble, with members playing together both in-person and virtually.

The program includes music for winds and brass, music for string orchestra and music for everyone together.  The winds and brass will conclude their year-long exploration of Gordon Jacob’s “Old Wine in New Bottles,” a set of pieces based on old English folk songs.  The orchestra’s string section will then perform Chicago-based composer Stacy Garrop’s "Lo Yisa Goy,” an instrumental setting of the Jewish prayer for peace.

Everyone will then come together to play two works: Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “English Folk Song Suite,” orchestrated by none other than Gordon Jacob, and Nkeiru Okoye's "Voices Shouting Out,” written in response to the events of 9/11.

In a year like no other, the Cal Poly Symphony has come together – in new ways and old – to make music and connect.  Join us as we make the most of this last concert of our season.

Repertoire:

Gordon Jacob: Old Wine in New Bottles, mvt. 4
Stacy Garrop: Lo Yisa Goy
Ralph Vaughan Williams: English Folk Song Suite
Nkeiru Okoye: Voices Shouting Out
