Introduction

Course

MU324 is a course about the history of the symphony. In this class, you will learn about the symphony as a musical genre and survey its development. You will also learn about the historical development of the orchestra as an ensemble.

Website

This website is a supplement to the course and focuses on the history of the orchestra as an ensemble.

The purpose of this website is to provide several threads of information so that connections can be made between:

(1) The historical development of the orchestra,
(2) The historical development of individual instruments in the orchestra, and
(3) Representative repertoire, specifically symphonies.

Therefore, the three main areas of the website relate to these threads of information:

(1) Orchestra – History
(2) Instruments – History
(3) Repertoire
